As the Brown victory and the TEAParties seem to have killed the whole enchillada approach to health care, I’m reminded of a debate I had with John Harwood on NBC back in Novemer. I said the Pelosi plan was ‘pulp’; Harwood said I was crazy. Can’t find the original video, but here’s an article which quoted me at the time.
2009 Predictions, Part ?
Media Alert
On the air with Jerry Doyle, talking Obama bank break-up plan, and the use of anti-trust powers to govern in leiu of congressional power. If they can’t win in Congress they simply use the justice department and the regulators to harrass various businesses as a Nixonian Imperial Presidency. Why does Jerry Doyle get that, and so few conventional commentators do?
Media Alert
I will be on WBT in Charlotte tonight at 9 pm with Bob Davis. Topic: Obama’s proposal to break-up the banks. I can’t help but note that the Clinton bear market began the day he proposed to break up Microsoft. My inner cub is growling.
Voo Doo and Earthquakes, II
No, it’s the vulnerability to a seismic disaster. A Richter 7 does not destroy a health nation. But as Helmut Schoek says in his classic book, Envy, tribal magical practices such as Voo Doo are superstitious attempts to practice envy. Envy and occultism are anthropologically linked; such societies never accumulate capital decently protected system of infrastructure.
Voo Doo and Earthquakes
In the link below Al Mohler argues that Voo Doo does not directly cause earthquakes, so (subtext) maybe they’re unrelated, or maybe God sent a supernatural judgment. I think he and Robertson both miss the point. It’s not the earthquake itself that stands out in the Haitian disaster…
Hitler reax to Mass
Hat tip to Glen Reynolds for this. (wait for obligatory disclaimer). No I don’t believe that the Democrats are like Hitler.
Of Voo Doo and Earthquakes
Al Mohler seems to be trying to triangualate between Robertson and almost everyone else. Does Al get it right? ” We can trace the effects of a drunk driver to a car accident, but we cannot trace the effects of voodoo to an earthquake — at least not so directly. Will God judge Haiti for its spiritual darkness?”

Church Politics, II
But that’s the way it works. The Church has been the training grounds for politics, especially the Episcopal Church. But the conservatives turned inward while the national Church burned. When they finally woke up, the only thing they had to offer were Church splits, leaving the national Church still on fire, and wounding hundreds of parishes.
Church Politics
As an Episcopal Vestryman, I see a Church-microcosm of our national politics: a electorate polarized between a hard left and a hard right. Narcissists who send out emotion triggering dog-whistles. People who respond to them based on impulse rather than clear reasoning. I see little of the knowledge of our basic standards, documents, covenents, constitutions and charters in either church or state.
Same Fallacies, Different Disaster
Here’s my Post-Gazette article rebutting the judgment of God/judgment of gaia theory of hurricanes. Seems like it applies to earthquakes quite as well.
